About Me
After a haphazard early career spent working and travelling around the world, I stumbled into writing as a way to fund a PhD at the University of York’s Centre for Medieval Studies.  My first romance was published in 1991, the same year that I moved to York, and since then I have written 59  books for Harlequin Mills & Boon as Jessica Hart (and am half way through my 60th as I write this) I’ve always written warm, light-hearted stories that are long on character and dialogue, and short on explicit sex, and in February 2013 my most recent book, Hitched!, was one of the launch books for Harlequin’s new fun and flirty KISS line in North America.

Over the past 20 years my books have been translated into 23 languages and have sold more than 14 million copies worldwide.  I’ve won two of the most prestigious awards in romantic fiction, a RITA from Romance Writers of America and the UK’s coveted Romance Prize (now the RoNA Rose) awarded by the Romantic Novelists’ Association, and the National Readers’ Choice Award (in the US) twice.

The more I write, the more interested I am in how and why romance works and I have taught a number of courses and workshop, including a 10 week course on writing popular fiction, and a one day ‘Crash Course in Writing Romance’ for the Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of York.

In addition to writing romance, I now write mainstream ‘time slip’ novels set in present day and Elizabethan York under my real name, Pamela Hartshorne (see separate page). I am also a freelance project editor for high quality illustrated books, including York Minster: A Living Legacy, Lincoln Cathedral: A Journey from Past to Present, and The York Merchant Adventurers and their Hall.
